Getting Help for Mental Illnesses

Wanting information on mental illnesses so you can understand how to get the help you need? If you are currently living with a mental illness such that it may be difficult for you to reach out and ask for help, know that this is completely understandable. First, mental illnesses tend to trap their victims in a vicious cycle that makes it difficult for them to reach out and ask someone to help them. Second, there is still somewhat of a stigma attached to someone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness. There is still a lot for people to learn, and one of the most important things to understand is that having a mental illness is no one’s fault.

Getting help for mental illnesses

In order for someone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness to truly have an enjoyable life, they must make their good mental health a priority. If they do not, they will continue in the vicious cycle that mental illnesses are so well known for. How does someone know whether or not they have a mental illness? A general rule of thumb is that those who may be suffering with a mental illness are not able to perform their everyday duties in a normal fashion. Instead, the mental illness gets in the way of being able to function properly.

The following information is about three of the many types of mental illnesses people are suffering from nowadays.

Anxiety disorders

An anxiety disorder is a serious medical condition that can stir up feelings of extreme fear, cause people to worry all the time and create panic attacks. All of these issues tend to make it so that someone cannot think or function properly, lowering their quality of life.

Behavioral disorders

When someone is suffering with a behavior disorder, it often means that they do not know how to properly behave in certain situations. They are often emotionally disturbed and will continue to act out unless they seek treatment.

Substance abuse disorders

Many people do not realize that substance abuse is a mental illness, as abusing drugs can change the way someone thinks and acts. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in 2014, 20.2 million adults in the United States had a substance use disorder.
