Health History Considerations With Nasal Ketamine Treatment

Spravato Nasal Esketamine Columbia, SC

Are you thinking about trying a new treatment for depression? Spravato nasal esketamine has recently been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the treatment of depression in adults. In order to be approved, patients must first try some of the other treatment options in place as Spravato® nasal esketamine is specifically used for treatment-resistant depression.

How it works

Learning more about Spravato nasal esketamine and how it can help treat depression is necessary when a patient wants to try this newly approved treatment option. When patients live with depression, not only do they need a solution but also have to understand how each treatment option works. Since there are many levels of depression, it will depend on a patient’s level when it comes to which treatment option is going to work for them.

Spravato causes greater improvement from depressive symptoms when combined with an antidepressant than just using an antidepressant alone. However, Spravato nasal esketamine must be administered in a certified center due to its potential sedation and disassociation properties. Patients will be closely monitored for a couple of hours and then can go home. Patients will need someone else to drive because the treatment may cause mild impairment in coordination and cognition for several hours after the initiation of treatment.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Spravato nasal esketamine, in conjunction with an oral anti-depressant, was approved for the treatment of depression in adults who have tried other anti-depressant medicines but have not benefited from them.

Health history considerations

Part of the Spravato nasal esketamine treatment process requires patients to first be approved. Not all people suffering from depression will be able to undergo this treatment. The following is a list of three medical conditions that may exclude someone from approval.

Liver disease

When someone is living with liver disease, there may be at a greater risk of them experiencing the side effects that come with using Spravato nasal esketamine to treat depression, e.g., sedation, disassociation, cognitive impairment, increase in blood pressure. Due to these potential complications, patients will need to make a consultation appointment with a psychiatrist to find out if they are approved or not.

Hypertension

Spravato nasal esketamine has the potential to increase a patient’s blood pressure within the first few hours after taking the drug. For patients who already have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, this increase can lead to them experiencing an increased strain on the heart, blood vessels and brain. Patients with high blood pressure must consult with a medical professional to find out whether or not they can take this newly approved depression treatment.

Past substance abuse

Because Spravato nasal esketamine is a controlled substance, those who have a past history of substance abuse or misuse will need to first be approved by a psychiatrist. Having a history of addiction does not mean that someone will not be approved to undergo this new form of depression treatment. It simply means that these patients need to be properly evaluated before being approved.

Ready to find out if you are approved

Do you want to get approved for Spravato nasal esketamine depression treatment?
