Ketamine IV Therapy for Depression

Ketamine IV therapy helps patients with treatment-resistant depression symptoms. These individuals often have suicidal ideations. The FDA approved ketamine to treat depression for adults. If you want to know more about ketamine IV therapy for depression, here are the details.

The procedure

The patient should not eat or drink before the therapy. The psychiatrist may direct how the patient will take oral medications. Trained nurses will help make the patient comfortable while starting the IV connection. The patient may become drowsy during the therapy. The staff will keep an eye on the patient during the ketamine IV therapy.

The nurse will continue to keep an eye on the patient for another hour. Then, the doctor will discharge the patient into the care of the patient’s companion or guardian. Normal medications and diet may resume. The patient should not drive or drink alcohol. Making important decisions should be set aside for a day after the treatment.

The patient should receive three infusions to see if the treatment is effective. More sessions may follow. Most patients could receive three to six infusions. The attending doctor will check if the patient still needs a maintenance phase. The doctor will also determine if the patient needs another form of treatment.

The ideal candidate

Ketamine IV therapy is for individuals with treatment-resistant depression. They still have not experienced significant improvement from antidepressants or psychotherapy. Many of these patients begin to feel more hopeless. Ketamine infusion gives them hope by removing depression symptoms.

Many people think twice about taking ketamine infusions. This drug is a known party drug. It has addictive properties. Even so, this does not mean that the patients receiving ketamine infusion will be addicted to the drug.

The dosage of ketamine in this treatment is very low. The patient will receive the dosage from licensed healthcare professionals. The treatment venue is a health facility. The risk of addiction or abuse is very low.

The risks

Ketamine may have addictive properties, but its abuse is unlikely. The patient can only receive it under the watchful eye of trained medical staff. Possible side effects from this treatment are nausea and high blood pressure. The patient may also experience perceptual disturbances. There could also be dissociation or out-of-body experiences.

How ketamine IV therapy works

Ketamine targets the brain’s NMDA receptors. It binds to these receptors and increases the level of glutamate. Then, glutamate activates AMPA receptors. The activation allows the neurons to communicate better along the new pathways. This process enhances cognition, mood, and thought patterns.

Ketamine can also affect depression by reducing inflammatory signals. These signals have a connection to several mood disorders. The inflammatory responses also affect the way areas of the brain communicate. More studies are exploring how ketamine affects many sections of the brain at the same time.

Suicidal ideation and ketamine

Studies show that ketamine IV therapy helps stop suicidal ideation. The participants continued to do well for about six weeks after initial treatment. They took the infusion with antidepressants. The suicidal risk decreased.

Ketamine changes the functions of neurotransmitter systems in key areas of the brain. Scientists wonder why some patients respond well to ketamine, while others do not. In responsive patients, glutamate starts to regulate a big part of the nervous system. Glutamate also helps rewire the brain by creating new neural pathways. This significant change does not happen in other patients.

Long-term ketamine infusions still need more research. A common side effect is having out-of-body experiences. The continuous studies may result in new forms of ketamine medications. These new ketamine medications may not induce out-of-body experiences anymore.

The benefits

Symptoms of chronic pain or depression go away after ketamine infusion. This form of therapy allows patients to have a happy and low-pain life. The treatment is semi-invasive and almost painless. There is no surgery at any point of the treatment. Ketamine IV therapy calms the mind during and after the infusion.

The treatment is effective and quick. The side effects are treatable and mild. Ketamine will continue to work even after the body metabolizes it. This is more evident in patients with severe depression. The depression symptoms improve hours after the infusion.

A ketamine IV therapy can help patients get back their health and their lives

Ketamine IV therapy may improve your depression symptoms. Psychotherapy or antidepressants may not be working for you anymore. Ketamine is an off-label drug. Even so, it can help remove a patient’s suicidal thoughts after one session. Working with your doctor can maximize the advantages of this treatment.
