Nasal Esketamine Treatment for Depression

Nasal Esketamine Treatment Columbia, SC

Are you having a hard time overcoming or struggle with symptoms of depression? If so, you may be a good candidate for Spravato®, a nasal esketamine treatment from a psychiatrist, especially if other treatment methods have not worked thus far for your condition.

How the nasal esketamine treatment process works

During your visit for nasal esketamine treatment, the psychiatrist may discuss your current symptoms, review your medical history, talk about the goals for treatment and administer the nasal esketamine before scheduling a follow-up visit. The following is a review of each step in the nasal esketamine treatment process.

A review of your symptoms

The nasal esketamine treatment process for patients who are battling depression is different for every patient. However, most consultation visits and visits for treatment follow a similar process. During the first visit, the psychiatrist conducts a thorough review of the patient’s previous medical history (mental and physical treatment) and discusses the symptoms the patient is experiencing with them. This allows them to get a better idea of what treatments may work best and if nasal esketamine treatment is an effective solution.

Discussion of your treatment goals

The psychiatrist also takes into consideration the treatment preference of the patient, based on what they hope to gain from their visit with the psychiatrist. No two patients are the same, and each is battling a unique concern. Psychiatrists will discuss the symptoms the patient is experiencing directly with the patient and why they feel as if the issues may exist. For example, a patient that is feeling depressed after traumatic episodes in their life may benefit more from psychotherapy to address the root cause for the depression and other mental health concerns.

Administering the nasal esketamine

Spravato®, nasal esketamine treatment, is a simple treatment process, although too much esketamine could cause severe side effects. Therefore, the nasal esketamine must be administered by a licensed mental health professional. This ensures optimal safety as well as effectiveness. The dosages vary based on the specific purpose of treatment and the overall health of the patient. After the esketamine is administered, the psychiatrist will likely need to monitor the patient for an hour or two to ensure there are no side effects that require treatment. The patient may also need to arrange for a ride home.

Follow-up visit and at-home care

Nasal esketamine treatment involves multiple visits. After the first treatment session, the psychiatrist may schedule a follow-up visit, which typically takes place the same week. Two per week is routine for the first month, and after the first month the patient may switch to once per week. Each treatment involves two sprays (one for each nostril) of esketamine.
