Who Is Nasal Ketamine Treatment Right For?
Nasal ketamine treatment is now available as an additional treatment option for patients who have been diagnosed with depression. The FDA recently approved the drug as a treatment for depression, which is often recommended for those who have tried other options and have so far experienced no success. Patients are given their dose by a psychiatrist and must be monitored for about two hours.
About nasal ketamine treatment
Learning more about how nasal ketamine works and who it is recommended for is a patient’s next step when thinking about trying this new depression treatment. It does not work the same as other treatments for depression and instead works by helping to restore any problems within the brain cells. The drug has been used for many years for anesthesia reasons and to eliminate pain. Due to its euphoric properties, it is now being used to treat those diagnosed with depression. Besides depression, nasal ketamine is also used to treat complex regional pain syndrome type two, transient hemiplegia, cluster headaches and pain.
Side effects
There are a few side effects that patients may experience when choosing this treatment option to address their depression. These side effects include but are not limited to a euphoric feeling, lightheadedness, drowsiness, nausea, headaches and constipation. Because there are side effects that come with choosing this treatment option, a psychiatrist will thoroughly evaluate a patient’s medical history in order to determine whether or not they are indeed a candidate.
Who will benefit from nasal ketamine treatment?
Current recommendations for who will benefit from nasal ketamine treatment include all adults who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe depression, anyone who has been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder and anyone who has been diagnosed with a personality disorder. When it comes to being chosen as a candidate, it is necessary for a psychiatrist to carefully consider and compare the risks and benefits to each individual patient’s particular situation.
When it is determined that nasal ketamine treatment is indeed right for a patient, the psychiatrist will determine when the patient needs to start treatment, how much of the drug will be needed to experience positive results and how often the drug will need to be administered. While nasal ketamine spray can be used alone as a treatment therapy, it is believed to be most effective when it is used in combination with other therapies, especially cognitive behavioral therapy.
